Seeking capable singers and dramatic actors for our third Fringe musical, A Year and Change: The Paul Wellstone Story. This is an original piece chronicling and dramatizing the life of the late U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone, often referred to as "the conscience of the Senate" for his steadfast convictions and commitment to social justice and equality. The majority of the play focuses on Wellstone's final year in office, amidst the fallout of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the lead-up to the war in Iraq.
PAUL - The Senator. An idealist with a strong moral compass. Grappling with political realities and an unexpected illness.
SHEILA - His wife. Shares many of Paul's passions, but has felt left at the wayside. Concerned with apparent distance from Paul.
STEPHEN - His older brother, suffering from chronic depression. His actor doubles with GEORGE, the personable but foolish 43rd President.
HILLARY - Former First Lady, current U.S. Senator, future Secretary of State and presidential candidate. The cynical Yin to Paul's optimistic Yang.
NORM - Paul's opponent in the upcoming election. First a Democrat, now a Republican, he looks out primarily for Number One.
All actors are expected to sing - everyone but STEPHEN will have a solo. Generally seeking actors in their 20s-30s, but we're fairly open.
Actors will each be paid a $100 stipend for their time. Auditions will be held at North Hennepin Community College in Room FA 119 on Saturday, April 22 from 1pm-4pm in 10-minute slots. Each actor will be asked to bring a one-minute dramatic monologue and 32 bars of a contemporary musical theatre piece (accompanist provided), as well as a headshot and resume. Callbacks TBD. If you're unable to attend the audition, we will also accept video auditions via email at firstname.lastname@example.org until 10:00pm on Friday, April 28. Actors will be contacted the following day, April 29.
As Fringe participants, we will have five performances between August 3 and 13, with the possibility of an extra encore performance. We are also exploring the possibility of a fundraising preview performance determined by cast availability and logistics. Venue as well as specific dates/times still TBD. Rehearsals will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6:30-10:00pm beginning May 16, tentatively at North Hennepin Community College.
If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us via email.

Bryn Tanner (playwright) is the founder of Albino Squirrel and has been an active participant in Fringe Festival for three years, A Year and Change being his third original musical. He is an alum of North Hennepin Community College and Minnesota State University, Mankato, and has been involved with theatre in the Twin Cities for almost ten years.

Albino Squirrel is a small, budding theatre company in Minneapolis, this being their third production (or associated production) in the Minnesota Fringe Festival. Our first production, Pocahontas (Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Mouse) was chosen for Freshwater Theatre's annual Fringe remount in 2015, while A Mariokart Named Desire, co-produced with Melanistic Squirrel received an encore performance at STRIKE Theatre in 2016.
