Ongoing history series needs readers

American Civic Forum is seeking Black, Native, Latinx, and Asian-American actors or spoken-word performers for A Great and Happy People, an ongoing series of historical texts from U.S. history. Each show is curated around a different theme; past themes have included science, labor and Supreme Court rulings.

Readings include speeches, poems, debates, songs, court rulings and letters from a wide variety of sources. These texts are interpreted by a rotating cast of performers. Want to get a feel for what kind of stuff we're doing? Here are archives for our shows on civil rights, science, women's history and the Civil War.

Upcoming shows include immigration (Sunday, May 14 at 7 p.m.), the history of LGBTQ+ rights (Sunday, June 11 at 7 p.m.) and the philosophical foundations of the Revolution (Sunday, July 9 at 7 p.m.). Performances are at Strike Theater (824 18th Ave NE, Minneapolis) and one 90-minute rehearsal is requested the week before performances. Performers receive a $50 stipend.

We expect to have more shows in 2017 (although they're not scheduled yet) and we're in the process of planning our 2018 season—so if you're interested but unvailable for any of the performances listed above, get in contact, anyhow, and we'll be in touch about future shows!
