SteppingStone Theatre seeks Classroom Assistants for Summer Camp Programs

SteppingStone Theatre seeks 4-6 qualified individuals who have interest and experience in youth work to join our summer staff as Classroom Assistants during our upcoming Summer Camp season. Previous youth work required. Interest in the Performing Arts preferred. Open to anyone 18+ who has completed at least some postsecondary coursework. Participate in a summer program which provides hands-on learning experience in youth work. Join SteppingStone’s seasonal summer staff in the capacity of a Classroom Assistant during our Theatre Arts Summer Camps. Assist our Teaching Artists with classroom activity facilitation, classroom management, student supervision, and more. This position is best suited for individuals who enjoy working with preschool and elementary-aged students in an active and fast-paced environment in which tasks vary from day to day.

Receive training, support, and mentorship throughout the summer. Directly apply what you’ve learned in trainings to your work in the classroom. Walk away from this program with greater understanding and ability to work with youth ages 3-17. Complete approximately 30 hours of ongoing training and 300 hours of direct classroom time. Work with your supervisor to set and achieve learning goals, identify areas of struggle, and begin to plan for future youth work endeavors.



  • Receive training on: summer camp facilitation, youth development, classroom management, best practices, leadership in the classroom, and professionalism in youth work.
  • Set learning goals for yourself. Meet with your supervisor throughout the summer to discuss challenges, evaluate learning, and assess progress towards goals.
  • Work all hours Monday-Friday between 8:00am-4:30pm.
  • Support teaching artists in the classroom with classroom management, student participation, and activity facilitation; proactively participate in all activities throughout the day (other duties as necessary).
  • Develop strong, professional relationships with students. Act as their advocate, confidant, and information resource.
  • Lead morning check-in, class-to-class transitions, lunch & recess supervision, and afternoon check-out.
  • Communicate classroom needs including behaviors, illness, injury, emergency, changes in plan, or teacher requests.
  • Maintain tidy classrooms, public spaces, and orderly class supplies by cleaning and organizing on a regular basis and reporting maintenance concerns to staff. 



  • Some college coursework in youth development, education, and/or the arts preferred
  • Verifiable employment or volunteer work with youth, in a group size of 10-20 students, ages 3-18
  • Reliable transportation including occasional travel to off-site locations
  • A working phone and email which is checked regularly
  • Ability to adhere to a set work schedule and be punctual
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, twist, lift, walk, and run for extended periods each day
  • Ability to keep track of information including dates, times, locations, student information, class information, etc.
  • Proactive in taking-on responsibilities and assisting whenever/wherever necessary
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic office and computer skills
  • Strong awareness to the sensitivity, safety, and wellbeing of students
  • No major conflicts between June 12-August 18. Must be able to commit to at least 7 of the 9 weeks. There will be no work requirements the week of July 3-7.


Start Date: June 12th
End Date:  August 18th
Workload: Full-time, seasonal, occasional weeks off
Wage: $9.50/hr
Orientation dates: May 20 & 27 from 9:00am-1:00pm; Additional training dates TBD.
